Each day, we will feature several courses. The number of courses posted about each day will vary depending on our schedule and tasks for the day. Throughout the session, we will feature as many courses as possible.

We apologize that there was no post Friday, interns were were busy fulfilling various other duties.

Today in "How to Make a Podcast," students worked on recording their podcasts.

This afternoon in “Math, Statistics, and Game Theory,” SEP students watched a video experiment about visual cognition. Afterward, students talked about the experiment and shared their thoughts and ideas about it. Next, students watched a video that explained the experiment and what visual cognition is.

Today in "Architecture: Redesign in order to Reuse," students began brainstorming for their redesign of the Landmark hotel in downtown Charlottesville.

This afternoon in “Parsing Primary Sources: Learning to Read like a Historian,” SEP historians discussed the March on Washington. Students shared their thoughts and opinions about some of the sources from this historical event. Next, students worked in groups on their final project, which is a deconstructed essay in the form of a poster in which students worked to create a thesis for today.

This morning in "Light! Mysteries of the Electromagnetic Spectrum," students had their minds bent as they considered the properties of light. Specifically, students studied the wave and particle nature of light. Then, students discussed M.C. Escher and Louis De Broglie's contributions to the world, including De Broglie's Equation. To find the wavelength of the world record for a MLB pitch, students applied this particular equation with Planck's constant.

This morning in "Dimensions of Disadvantage," students engaged with the topic of sexuality. After a conversation about sexuality and related stereotypes, students watched episode 6 of season 2 of Queer Eye, "The Sky's the Limit." In this particular episode, a transgender man receives a makeover from the Fab 5. Once the class had watched the episode, the class engaged in a discussion about the portrayals included in the episode, how media impacts perspectives, and what it can look like to be a minority in a heteronormative society.

This afternoon in "Building a World-Class Paper Roller Coaster," students continued to construct their roller coasters. Today they focused more on the coaster part than the supporting structures.

Today in "The Gender Game," students heard about really REALLY bad research about biological sex in babies. Then, students had to construct a plan for their own research project based on anything. One restriction students did have was to focus on how their personal and implicit biases influence their research plans.

In "(Super) Human Physics," students learned about kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy as they are related to jump height. Students did a lot of graphing and data analysis today.

Today in "Periodic Explorations," students learned about John Dalton's atomic theory as well as Berzelius' ideas surrounding atomic masses. Additionally, students were educationally entertained when they applied their understanding of elemental properties like reactivity and atomic mass to hypothesize what they thought would happen in three different experiments. Each experiment was a latex balloon filled with a different gas (e.g. helium, hydrogen, and hydrogen and oxygen) that was lit with a flame.

Best,

Nicole, Olivia and Abby
