Today in in "Religion, Rulers, and Riots," students learned about Roman politics and religion. They played a role-play game in which each person in the room was a contributing figure. Students were members of the Roman senate. Teacher, Peter Morris, had even more power. In particular, the class was learning about the dynamics of Roman politicians, citizenship, plebs vs patricians, and Cicero.

Today in "Solar Circuits - Solar Homes," students worked in pairs to evaluate research and then present their findings to the class. Each pair was assigned a different resource such as natural gas (renewable and nonrenewable) to become an expert in and teach about. Students had the opportunity to complete a crossword puzzle on resources as well.

This morning in "Financing your Future," SEP students warmed up by practicing calculating percentages for each calculation they did correctly students earned "money" to put in their "bank account". Next students learned about minimum wage jobs and filled out mock job applications, and participated in a simulated job interview

Today in "Do as Romans Do," students began the class with a quick review of Roman Numerals. The majority of the class was focused on roman architecture. Students shared what they already knew before diving into the lesson. Throughout the lesson, students had the opportunity to construct their own triumphal arch, showcasing an accomplishment or honoring a person. They also had the opportunity to try their hand at constructing clay arches and exploring the importance of the keystone.

Today in "How to Make a Podcast," students worked on recording their podcasts. Students work in groups to record an episode for a podcast based on a class theme. For the 9-11 group, the class theme (voted on by the class) is media issues.

This morning in "Explorations in Neuroscience," SEP 5-6 scientists listened to guest presenters from UVA's Ph.D. program in Neuroscience. Students had the opportunity to listen to a presentation about the various functions of the brain and creativity in the brain. After the presentation, students took a look at a real human brain and had the chance to look at the different parts of the brain and talk with the Ph.D. students about them. Lastly, SEP students engaged in a question and answer segment, where they had the chance to ask any of their lingering questions about the brain.
